Today, on the 106th anniversary of Francis Bacon’s birth, we are pleased to announce that The Estate of Francis Bacon will publish Francis Bacon: Catalogue Raisonné, edited by Martin Harrison, FSA, on 30th June 2016. The catalogue will comprise five volumes in a slipcase.

TWO STUDIES FOR PORTRAIT DISPLAYED IN NEW YORK AHEAD OF AUCTION

Francis Bacon’s 1976 painting Two Studies for Portrait is due to be exhibited to the public ahead of it’s inclusion in Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Evening Auction on 10 November 2015.

The work is one of only nine portraits Bacon painted of his friend, the American photographer Peter Beard. Bacon met Peter Beard a decade prior to Two Studies for Portrait creation, at the Marllborough Gallery in London in 1965, at the opening of one of Bacon’s exhibitions, where he was carrying a copy of Beard’s book about the destruction of wildlife in Africa. Their friendship developed and in 1972 Bacon invited Beard to his studio on Narrow Street overlooking the River Thames to photograph him and one of these photographs appears to be the basis for Bacon’s large-scale Self-Portrait, painted the following year. Beard became one of the artist’s closest confidents for much of the latter part of his life.

Also present appears to be a merging of the features of Bacon himself, a technique he had began employing in 1975. It is thought the painting marks a reemergence by the artist whom at aged 70 and following the death of his companion George Dyer years earlier, and friends since, had began to feel socially isolated. Christies claim that ‘In Beard’s distinguished features we begin to see a more confident Bacon, an artist who is happy to revel once more in the physical joy of the act of painting.’

GAGOSIAN GALLERY TO SHOWCASE BACON’S LATE PAINTINGS

New York’s Gagosian Gallery will be hosting a new Francis Bacon exhibition from November 2015 entitled ‘Francis Bacon: Late Paintings’. The show will be an opportunity to view more than twenty-five paintings from the last two decades of Bacon’s life, when the artist painted in London and Paris.

‘Late Paintings’ becomes the third Francis Bacon exhibition to be held at the Gagosian Gallery, and is the latest in a series of exhibitions focusing on gathering and reexamining the late works of groundbreaking artists including Picasso, Moore and Warhol.

‘In his late paintings, Bacon refined themes that had long obsessed him. He quoted reflexively from his oeuvre, reworking subjects to strip them to the bare essentials.’ – Gagosian Gallery

The show’s accompanying publication edited by Michael Cary, will include new essays by Richard Calvocoressi; Richard Francis, curator of the 1985 Bacon retrospective at Tate; Mark Stevens and poet and novelist Colm Tóibín. In addition, the catalogue contains an interview with Martin Harrison, author of the forthcoming catalogue raisonné; reprinted texts by Eddy Batache, Bruce Bernard, and Jeffrey Bernard; never before published documentary photographs by Edward Quinn; and an appendix of existing interviews conducted for international publications during Bacon’s late career.

This exhibition is organised by Gagosian directors Valentina Castellani and Stefan Ratibor, and includes important loans from numerous international museums and private collections. More information can be found on the exhibition site here.

HEAD I PUBLICLY DISPLAYED AHEAD OF AUCTION

Francis Bacon’s Head I (1958) goes on display to the public today at Sotheby’s in London. The painting will be available to view through to Thursday when Head I will be auctioned as part of Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Auction on 15 October.

Head I is Bacon’s portrait of his lover at the time Peter Lacy, in 1958. The painting was completed in the borrowed rooms he occupied in Overstrand Mansions in Battersea. More information on Head I is available via the lot notes on Sotheby’s website.

Also worth reading is Sotheby’s dissection of Bacon’s Head I in the article ‘Passion & Power: The Anatomy of a Francis Bacon Portrait’. Here the auction house explore the possible influence of Van Gogh, John Deakin and Baron von Schrenk Notzing’s book, Phenomena of Materializations (1924)

DEAKIN PHOTOGRAPH OF FRANCIS BACON TO BE INCLUDED IN VOGUE EXHIBITION

London’s National Portrait Gallery is set to exhibit a famous John Deakin photograph of Francis Bacon in the 2016 show ‘Vogue 100: A Century of Style’.

The major exhibition curated by Robin Muir has been organised by the National Portrait Gallery in collaboration with British Vogue as part of the magazine’s centenary celebrations. It promises to showcase 100 years of cutting-edge fashion, beauty and portrait photography. A remarkable range of photography commissioned by British Vogue since it was founded in 1916 will be brought together for the first time, with over 280 prints from the Condé Nast archive and international collections.

‘Vogue 100: A Century of Style’ will include work by many of the leading twentieth-century photographers, including John Deakin, Lee Miller, Irving Penn and Snowdon. And include many of the faces that have shaped the cultural landscape of the twentieth century, from Henri Matisse to Francis Bacon.

Photographer John Deakin’s 1952 portrait of Francis Bacon is set to be displayed, this portrait is available to view via the V&A website. Deakin’s photography played a significant role in Bacon’s art, several of Francis Bacon’s most significant paintings were based on photographs, which he commissioned from Deakin.

RARE BACON SEASCAPE DISPLAYED BY ORDOVAS

Ordovas is displaying Francis Bacon’s ‘Figure in Sea’ circa 1957 in their new London exhibition ‘The Big Blue’. The show is an exhibition of work inspired by the sea, spanning two millennia, on now through to 12 December.

“After the fascinating experience of working with Damien Hirst for our exhibition Self, in October 2014, I approached Damien again to see if he would consider another collaboration to coincide with Frieze this year. We embarked on a series of conversations, from which Damien conceived the idea of an exhibition, curated by Ordovas gallery, on the theme of the sea. The Big Blue is the result of this new collaboration: in it we explore some of the ways in which the sea influences art, by looking at works that span many centuries from Roman times until today. Our intention is to offer an original and penetrating glimpse into a universal theme.” – Gallery Founder Pilar Ordovas explains the shows conception and focus.

Bacon’s ‘Figure in Sea’ circa 1957 is one of only two surviving seascapes, and was the starting point for the show’s selection process. Ordovas believe that it is thought Bacon intended to add to the lightly present structure outlined in the sea. ‘Figure in Sea’ remained unrecorded until it was discovered in 1997 a number of years after Bacon had passed away.

Other artists featured in this show include Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, and Damien Hirst, whose 2008-09 piece Heaven (a shark preserved in formaldehyde) is on display. The first book to be published by the Foundation introduces the objectives of this institution dedicated to the life, work and methodology of Francis Bacon. This high-quality publication is being shared with many art museums and galleries around the world. This book, while not available for sale, is offered for free to each visitor attending the guided tour of the Foundation.

The book throws light on the close ties that Bacon enjoyed with the Principality of Monaco, as well as the South of France and the City of Light. Two eminent art historians, Martin Harrison and Eddy Batache, enrich the book with their texts. The book closes with a comprehensive chronology of the artist’s life.

The Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation’s mission is to promote a deeper understanding of the work and life of Francis Bacon worldwide, with a particular focus on the time that the artist lived and worked in Monaco and Southern France. BACON ART ATTENDS COLLECTION LAMBERT REOPENING

Francis Bacon’s Seated Figure (1974) is currently being displayed in Avignon France.

Two exhibitions mark The Collection Lambert’s reopening to the public, following the completion of refurbishment to increase the exhibition space, Seated Figure features in the show Patrice Chéreau: An Imaginary Museum

The temporary inaugural exhibition plays tribute to Patrice Chéreau, who Collection Lambert describes as a giant in the worlds of theatre, cinema and opera. The show runs until 11 October, hosted at The Hôtel de Chaumont space.

The Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation Monaco present their first sponsored project: ‘Francis Bacon – The Wivenhoe Chapter’.

Art historian Katharina Günther undertook a twelve-month research project analysing previously unresearched material. The project aims to deepen the understanding of the relationship between Bacon and the artist Denis Wirth Miller.

Over 250 pieces of unstudied working material from the MB Art Collection including books, magazines and torn pages, formed the project’s starting point. The materials originated from artist Denis Wirth Miller’s small studio in Wivenhoe Essex. Katharina Günther’s project is a fascinating read outlining the relationship between Bacon and Wirth Miller, exploring shared passions and shared workspaces, with Bacon known to have enjoyed working at Wirth Miller’s studio.

With its strong resemblance to his London studio, the overall set-up of Wirth Miller’s Wivenhoe atelier must have been to Bacon’s liking. For almost 25 years, he shared the small, cluttered space with Wirth Miller on a regular basis until in 1975, Bacon bought his own property close to his friend’s house. In the working environment provided by Wirth Miller, Bacon had found an artistic home away from home. – Katharina Günther

Katharina Günther explores Bacon’s lasting impression on Wirth Miller’s work, as the latter experimented with Bacon’s subjects and styles in the 1950s, notably a series of Dog paintings in the manner of Francis Bacon’s Study of a Dog, 1952 and Man with Dog, 1953. ‘FRANCIS BACON: INVISIBLE ROOMS’ DISPLAYING IN 2016

The Tate has announced that in 2016 Tate Liverpool will be hosting a new Francis Bacon exhibition: ‘Francis Bacon: Invisible Rooms’.

The show plans to feature approximately 35 large-scale paintings and works on paper surveying the variety of Bacon’s painterly compositions united by Bacon’s common motif of surrounding subjects with a faint, framing, cubic or elliptic cage. A technique first introduced by the artist in the 1930s.

‘Considered one of Britain’s greatest modern painters, Francis Bacon often painted an architectural, ghost like framing device around his subjects that structure many of his iconic paintings. Francis Bacon: Invisible Rooms addresses some of Bacon’s most powerful works with a renewed focus on their spatial structure.’ – Tate Liverpool

Francis Bacon: Invisible Rooms is organised by Tate Liverpool and Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. The exhibition is curated by Kasia Redzisz, Senior Curator with Lauren Barnes, Assistant Curator at Tate Liverpool. After displaying in Liverpool, ‘Francis Bacon: Invisible Rooms’ will travel to Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (7 October 2016 – 8 January 2017).
